Castelnaud

The medieval castle of Castelnaud is built on a rocky outcrop and offers a splendid panorama on the Dordogne valley. Through a collection of arms and armours, full-scale reconstructions of war machines (mangonel, trébuchet, pierrière, bricole) you will learn about the art of warfare in the Middle Ages and be shown certain aspects of the lifestyle of the Lords of Castelnaud, with the garden of medieval inspiration and the furnished keep. The path for unguided visits is dotted with signposts, multimedia, interactive terminals, mock-ups. In summer, guided visits on the theme of Medieval Warfare are conducted in French, English and Dutch.

The museum features a vast collection (polearms, swords, daggers, artillery pieces, defensive outfits...). The sober design highlights the collections and provides detailed explanations on the manufacture and use of the weapons and armours. The evolution of the fortification and the besieging techniques is also shown on a slide-show, films and video games available to the public.
